Webinar 3: Diversity of inner music experience: Research directions

As we approached the one‑year anniversary of the launch of the Inner Music and Wellbeing Network, we felt it was the perfect moment to reflect on the research relating to the intersection of musical imagery and wellbeing that we were already aware of as a collective, and—more importantly—where it might, could, and even should go next. As a closed event for network members only, our third webinar’s focus was ‘Diversity of inner music experience: Research directions’.

Network members Professor Erkki Huovinen and Professor Philip Beaman each contributed short talks relating respectively to musical imagery and identity, and to the potential for musical imagery to be supportive for individuals with ADHD. We were sure this would lead to interesting discussions about future directions for inner music and wellbeing research. The webinar also included a more participatory session in which we worked together to identify research gaps, begin developing collaborative project ideas, and discuss what we hoped to achieve through a network research project eliciting (hopefully) diverse accounts of inner music experiences as they relate to wellbeing.

The webinar was held 1–3pm BST, 21 May 2025.
